Description

On chilly nights when you crave a comforting, nostalgic meal, Cozy Hamburger Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes hits the spot. This quick and easy dish combines savory ground beef, rich brown gravy, and fluffy mashed potatoes for a hearty, satisfying dinner the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (made from about 2 lbs of potatoes)

Instructions

1. Brown the Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if needed.

2. Add Onion & Garlic: Stir in the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened and fragrant.

3. Make the Gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir to coat. Cook for 1–2 minutes to eliminate any raw flour taste. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer.

4. Thicken: Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5–7 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy has thickened.

5. Serve: Spoon the rich and cozy hamburger gravy over warm, creamy mashed potatoes. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

To achieve the creamiest, fluffiest mashed potatoes, use a combination of starchy Russet and creamy Yukon Gold potatoes. Boil them until very tender, then mash with a touch of butter, milk, and seasonings. For extra richness, stir in a dollop of sour cream or cream cheese. Be sure not to overwork the potatoes, or they can become gummy.
