Ingredients
- 24 to 32 ounce frozen homestyle beef meatballs
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (10.5 ounce) condensed French onion soup
- 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thicker gravy)
- 1/4 cup water (if using cornstarch)
- 1 to 1 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
- Fresh parsley or thyme (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
1. Layer Crockpot: Add the frozen meatballs to a 4 to 6-quart slow cooker. Top with the sliced onions and minced garlic.
2. Make Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the French onion soup, beef broth, balsamic vinegar (if using), thyme, and black pepper. Pour the sauce over the meatballs.
3. Slow Cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 5 to 6 hours (or HIGH for 2 to 3 hours), stirring halfway through if possible.
4. Thicken (Optional): If you want a thicker gravy, whisk the cornstarch and water to make a slurry. Stir the slurry into the crockpot and cook on HIGH for 10 to 15 minutes until thickened.
5. Add Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese over the top, cover, and let it melt (about 5 minutes).
6. Serve: Garnish the Crock Pot French Onion Meatballs with fresh parsley or thyme, if desired. Serve the meatballs over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or enjoy them as a delectable appetizer.
Notes
Choose the right frozen meatballs: Opt for high-quality, homestyle beef meatballs for the best texture and flavor.
Slice onions thinly: Thin onion slices will ensure they cook down and caramelize beautifully in the slow cooker.
Use low-sodium broth: This will help you control the overall saltiness of the dish.
Adjust spice levels: Feel free to add more or less black pepper, or even a pinch of cayenne, to suit your personal taste preferences.
Monitor cooking times: Cooking times may vary depending on your slow cooker model, so be sure to check for doneness accordingly.
