Decadent sweet potato casserole is a beloved dish that graces many holiday tables, from Thanksgiving to Christmas. This rich, comforting recipe combines the natural sweetness of fresh sweet potatoes with a delightful topping of toasted pecans, brown sugar, and butter. The result is a side dish that’s sure to delight your taste buds and warm your soul.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pound sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup chopped toasted pecans
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish with nonstick spray or butter.

2. Place the cubed sweet potatoes in a large pot and add enough water to cover them by 1 inch. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, until the potatoes are very tender. Drain the sweet potatoes well in a colander.

3. Return the cooked sweet potatoes to the pot and mash them with a potato masher or large fork until smooth. Add the brown sugar, butter, milk, eggs, salt, vanilla, and nutmeg. Beat with an electric hand mixer or stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture is well combined and creamy.

4. In a medium bowl, stir together the brown sugar, flour, and salt. Using a fork, mix in the melted butter until the topping is crumbly. Finally, fold in the chopped toasted pecans.

5. Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into the prepared casserole dish. Sprinkle the pecan topping over the top, ensuring it’s distributed evenly.

6. Bake the Decadent Sweet Potato Casserole for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the topping is slightly puffed and golden brown. Allow the casserole to rest for about 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

Select sweet potatoes that are firm, with smooth skin and no blemishes.

Be sure to mash the cooked sweet potatoes until they’re completely smooth and free of any lumps.

While the pecan topping is a classic, you can also try variations like marshmallows or a crisp oat topping.

Decadent Sweet Potato Casserole can be prepared a day or two in advance and refrigerated until ready to bake.
