Description

Egg Roll in a Bowl is a tasty and nutritious twist on the classic Chinese-American egg roll. Instead of the traditional fried wrapper, this dish features a savory mixture of ground beef, cabbage, carrots, and seasonings simmered together in one skillet.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef (85/15)
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp fine sea salt, or to taste
  • ¼ tsp black pepper, or to taste
  • ½ medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 medium carrot, julienned or coarsely grated
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 cups green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • ½ tsp granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp chopped green onion (optional)
  • ¼ tsp sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the olive oil. Add the ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks.

2. Next, add the diced onion and julienned carrot to the skillet with the beef. Sauté for about 3 minutes, until the vegetables are slightly softened.

3. Stir in the minced garlic and thinly sliced cabbage, along with the ground ginger. Cook, stirring often, for about 5 minutes or until the cabbage is tender.

4. Pour in the soy sauce, sesame oil, and sprinkle in the granulated sugar. Stir everything well and cook for another 2 minutes until heated through. Remove from heat, then garnish with chopped green onion and sesame seeds, if desired. Serve your delicious Egg Roll in a Bowl warm and enjoy!

Notes

Leftover Egg Roll in a Bowl can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, simply place the desired portion in a skillet or microwave-safe bowl and heat until warmed through. This dish also freezes well for up to 3 months.
