Description
The Swiss Mushroom Melt Sandwich is a true comfort food classic that combines juicy ground beef, melted Swiss cheese, and sautéed mushrooms between slices of toasted sourdough or rye bread.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 4 slices sourdough or rye bread
- 1 cup mushrooms (sliced)
- 1 tablespoon oil for grilling
- 2 tablespoon mayo or garlic aioli
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Sauté Mushrooms: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the mushrooms until golden brown and tender. Set aside.
2. Form Patties: In a bowl, mix the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape into patties slightly wider than the bread slices.
3. Cook Patties: In the same or another skillet, cook the beef patties until browned on both sides and cooked through. Flip once.
4. Assemble Sandwich: Spread mayo or garlic aioli on each bread slice. On two slices, place a slice of Swiss cheese, then a cooked patty, then the sautéed mushrooms, and finally another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices.
5. Grill: Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sandwiches and grill until the bread is golden and crisp on both sides, and the cheese is melted.
6. Serve: Slice the sandwiches in half and serve hot.
Notes
To enhance flavor, consider adding fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary to the sautéed mushrooms. Mix spices like smoked paprika or garlic powder into the ground beef before forming patties. Use flavored aioli instead of regular mayo for a unique twist.
